New Security Grilles for Norwich’s Royal Arcade

The Royal Arcade in Norwich is a landmark in the city and a treasured example of Art Nouveau architecture, dating back to 1899. Designed by George Skipper, the beautiful shopping arcade has been home to independent boutiques and cafes since it opened in the Victorian era. Since opening, it has of course modernised and evolved with the times, adding improvements to the arcade to ensure its use for many more years to come. We were recently contracted to provide new security grilles, replacing worn out grilles that no longer served their purpose. 

Before beginning the installation of the new grilles, we removed and safely disposed of damaged, defective and unsafe brickbong rolling grilles that were in place at the front market entrance and side entrance to the arcade. In their place we installed Hörmann HG-L aluminium rolling grilles, made to order to fit the exact measurements of the large openings. 

The new Hörmann HG-L aluminium rolling grilles have an aluminium honeycomb mesh leaf, with pull-out and crossbar protection to prevent the possibility of reaching through the grille, or items to be caught in the mesh. The design of the grille is optimised for safety and security whilst providing an attractive pattern, in keeping with the beautiful surroundings. 

Power operation with the precise engineering of the Hörmann WA300 motor and controlled by an integrated microprocessor control means that the doors open and close smoothly with soft start and stop, and a bottom safety edge of rubber. Operated with a key switch and prepared for automatic timer,  the grilles can be controlled safely by members of staff easily and simply. 

We carried out the works out of hours so as to not interfere with the opening hours of the shops and cafes in the arcade, with each grille completed in consecutive visits and timber fascias and shopfitting completed by others.
