The Artist Who Turns Garage Doors into Works of Art
21/10/2016When is a garage door more than just a garage door? When it has been used as a giant canvas for a talented artist. Andrea Manica is the freelance illustrator, muralist and sign painter who turns garage doors into works of art in her home city of Toronto, Canada. Her work caught attention worldwide when she created a beautiful tribute to the victims of the Orlando massacre. At Cooks Blinds and Shutters, we install dozens of garage doors across East Anglia and beyond – but we’ve never seen any quite like these. We love Andrea’s bold and colourful designs, so we got in touch with her to find out what inspires her to paint murals onto garage doors.

“Generally, the reason for painting is that the owners have experienced a lot of graffiti tags on their doors and are looking for something more artistic,†Andrea explains, “I’ve found that the doors have lasted a long time without being defaced (knock on wood!)â€
The artworks feature representations of the flora and fauna of Canada.

“It's been a great way to put my art into the world, and a lot of people see it while walking through the city. The owners typically allow me to do whatever I want with the design, so it’s a way to be totally free creatively!â€
Andrea’s art is inspired by nature, femininity, rebelliousness, and the insertion of beauty in unlikely places.

“I like the idea that my art is in secret places throughout the city. It was an amazing way to start my career as a mural painter, and a lot of people have seen my name and contacted me after looking at my garage door murals.â€
At Cook’s Blinds and Shutters, we have seen our fair share of garage doors, and we are extremely impressed by the way that Andrea has taken these seemingly ordinary parts of urban life and transformed them with beautiful murals.
